BTS style becomes K-pop icon

BTS wears eco-friendly clothing and always tries to promote traditional Korean culture in music videos and events.

In the latest article, The Korea Herald called BTS a musical style icon. BTS debuted in 2013 with familiar costumes including high-class sneakers, bandana (PV: Only square or triangle scarf) and baseball cap. In addition to having the highest net worth in Korea's A-list stars, the 7 members of BTS are known for their adventurous fashion sense.

Create social impact from small actions

Last month, South Korean President Moon Jae In appointed BTS as a special envoy. The President gave each BTS member a certificate of appointment, a diplomatic passport and a fountain pen. The group also participated and spoke at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 76) on September 20.

During the event, the band supported the international community's efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change. In particular, the costumes 7 members wore at the event became a topic of discussion on social networks.

According to The Korea Herald, each person's clothing has a more or less impact on the climate because the fashion industry emits harmful gases and lacks appropriate treatment methods.

Therefore, the fact that BTS wore luxurious clothes on the podium and spoke about how to solve the climate crisis made more people interested in this issue. At the event, the members chose the eco-friendly fashion brand Re;Code of Kolon Industries. The costumes are tailored to fit the purpose of the event.

Re;Code is a Korean brand founded in 2012 and values creativity. The brand uses a variety of discarded materials such as old or worn clothes, military fabrics, tents and parachutes.

“We were surprised when Hybe contacted the company and asked if it was possible to create nature-friendly suits for BTS. The two sides share the same opinion on climate change because our company also upholds the element of being friendly to nature. That's why we cooperated," an employee of Kolon Industries told The Korea Herald.

In a seven-minute speech at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, J-Hope said: "Everybody agrees that climate change is an important issue, but to put forward the best solution. It's still not easy."

Promoting traditional culture to the world

This isn't the first time BTS has proven that small actions can make a big impact. Recently, the boy group has spent most of their time developing in foreign markets, but they have never forgotten their roots and continuously spread Korean culture globally.

As Suga and Jungkook once said in an interview that they want to spread Korean culture to a global audience. Artists often intertwine Korean culture with their music, and they like to wear hanbok, the country's traditional dress.

From the song "Idol", the K-pop group has begun to spread Korean culture on a global scale. In the MV, the members wear traditional costumes created in a modern style by famous hanbok designer Baek Oak Soo.

During the 2018 Melon Music Awards, the members also wore hanbok and performed for 20 minutes. When the melody of the song "Idol" played, Jimin stepped onto the stage wearing a modernized traditional costume and dancing buchaechum. Buchaechum is a traditional Korean dance form that uses fans. Meanwhile, Jungkook mixes traditional and modern elements when paired with Nike Air Jordans.

The first time V debuted on the small screen also used hanbok. He acted in the KBS drama series Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. The film is set in the Kingdom of Silla.

The Korea Herald commented that as BTS became more and more popular in the global music scene, the group began to set its sights on the fashion field. In April, luxury brand Louis Vuitton selected seven members as brand ambassadors.

“I am delighted that BTS is joining Louis Vuitton,” said Louis Vuitton Artistic Director, Virgil Abloh. He expressed his excitement: “I look forward to this wonderful partnership. The event helps us to enter a new chapter where luxury and contemporary culture are combined. I can't wait to share all the exciting projects we're working on."

In 2019, French fashion house Dior also participated in the performance of the group's costumes. BTS drew attention when performing with custom costumes created by Kim Jones, the brand's Artistic Director. Outfits used by the group during their world tour. The outfit consisting of a bomber jacket, pants, shirt and belt was created by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama.
