From July to September, Youth IDEAS - a consulting organization under the Hong Kong Youth Federation - conducted a survey of 816 Hong Kongers aged 15-65. As a result, only about 14.1% of people surveyed have thought about joining showbiz.

6.6% of participants ever considered creating online content. Only 5% expressed interest in music production.

19 celebrities and 11 industry experts were also interviewed for the study. Only 3.7% are interested in making a film, while another 3.7% choose to produce a TV show and 1.5% say they are not sure.

In addition, 31% of the answers confirmed that the main barrier preventing them from joining showbiz was "lack of sponsorship and support". 26.2% said the local entertainment industry is “too commercialized or one-sided”.

On a scale of 1 to 10, survey respondents rated 6.23 points for the assertion that "entertainment production can become the best representative of Hong Kong culture". They give 6.01 points for the statement "producing entertainment products that enhance identity".

Ronald Chan Cheong-Kin, a representative of the research team, said that the entertainment industry has suffered a decrease in morale under the influence of recent events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition, with the new change in the Film Censorship Ordinance in Hong Kong, previously approved products will be banned if they are judged to be a threat.

"This creates problems for investors," Chan said.
Tenky Tin Kai-Man, a spokesman for the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, said the ambiguity of the new change hindered the film industry. He urges filmmakers to "not dismiss or avoid all themes at once" and keep creating.
